Workshop Description
This 1-day practical, interactive workshop will introduce you to the challenges of splinting for abnormal tone associated with complex pathologies such as acquired brain injury, stroke, cerebral palsy or spinal cord injury.
This course is designed for occupational therapists and physiotherapists working in an adult neuro setting, or hand therapy setting, who wish to gain further handling skills and understanding of splinting the neurologically impaired upper limb.
Attendees will be introduced to the theory and clinical reasoning behind splinting in neurology, as well as practical application of customised wrist / thumb / finger splints for clients with neurological impairment. All materials will be provided throughout the course

During this workshop you will fabricate the following:
Thermoplastics:
- Dorsal – Ventral positioning splint (Blythedale Children’s Hospital)
- Dynamic wrist extension assist splint (Dr Judy Ranka)
- Hand based thumb splint (opponens)

The day aims to ensure you:
- Have a basic understanding of upper limb anatomy and biomechanical principles with regard to neuro splinting
- Have a basic knowledge of the impact of abnormal muscle activity on progressive musculoskeletal deformity
- Are able to assess and classify abnormal tone
- Are able to use clinical reasoning and assessment to develop an individualised splinting plan including considerations for joint position and stretch; identifying the type and position of splint; contraindications / safety; and strategies to improve tolerance and compliance.
